A Family Thrust Into the Spotlight
This episode, I had the privilege—though not under the happiest circumstances—to talk with Cassandra Mara. Let me set the scene:
Cassandra’s wife, Dr. Janelle Mara, served nearly 18 years as a trusted and committed physician in the US Navy.
In a matter of hours, their family’s whole world changed when a right-wing military social media account targeted Janelle over her pronouns and her work with transgender healthcare.
Within that same day, a high-level official shared her photo with the chilling words: “pronouns updated, she/her fired.”
The “Twitter firing” went viral, spiraling from professional punishment to direct threats against their family—including Cassandra and their three children.
Cassandra’s Perspective: Real Threats, Real Pain
Cassandra is no stranger to military life or its complications. As an anatomy instructor who’s been by her wife’s side through multiple deployments, she understands sacrifice and resilience. But nothing prepared her for:
Seeing her wife’s career and reputation erased within minutes online.
Facing a torrent of hate—comments including calls for imprisonment and even death threats.
Being told to “move on base for safety,” while wrestling with the absurdity and fear of being closer to those who targeted her family.
Trying to protect her children and home, even as their livelihood hung in the balance.
The Human Cost of “Going Viral”
This isn’t just about one social media post. The consequences for Dr. Mara and her family included:
Loss of leadership roles in the Navy—essentially ending her career trajectory.
Overflowing fear and uncertainty about their financial security, given Cassandra’s part-time role and the family’s reliance on Janelle’s income.
Public doxxing by powerful individuals and subsequent flood of online and face-to-face harassment.
Pressure to “stay quiet, keep your head down, and hope it passes”—a sentiment Cassandra rejected.
Bigger Questions: Power, Silence, and Speaking Up
Cassandra and I dug into the core issues arising from this ordeal:
What happens when someone in power singles out a private citizen to millions?
Why do so many choose to comply or look away, even when witnessing injustice?
How do we build cultures—whether in the military or medicine—that reward courage and compassion, not silence?
This moment is about more than one family. It’s about what kind of society—and what kind of medical profession—we want to be a part of. Cassandra reminded us that when minorities (especially those in positions of service) are forced out or silenced, we lose some of the very best among us.
